Ants have evolved for millions of years alongside many other microorganisms to recycle waste materials on our planet. Where you may think of ants as dirty creatures living in the ground, it is crucial that they keep themselves and their homes clean.

All subterranean colonies do require an entire biome or microflora and microfauna that help keep things balanced. These include various insects, arthropods, springtails, mites, bacteria and in some cases, even certain beneficial molds and fungus.

Without them, the entire colony can collapse from all kinds of threats.
